Key Responsibilities
This position is primarily responsible for upholding the highest standards of maternal care, ensuring compliance with South African Nursing Council (SANC) and Department of Health (DOH) regulations, and reinforcing patient advocacy. Compliance and Standards: Execute all duties in alignment with SANC, DOH, and National Core Standards. Uphold practices according to the Company Code of Conduct, the Patient Rights and Responsibilities Charter, and National Millennium Development goals. Commit to continuous professional development.

Leadership and Supervision: Manage and supervise the nursing team effectively, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently. Devise and understand the Nursing Strategy to contribute towards the achievement of unit goals.

Quality of Care: Assure the highest quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards. Regularly measure health outcomes against patient care goals, and make recommendations to uphold hospital requirements and patient care protocols.

Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive patient records. Document all patient care services accurately and update care plans as patient needs change. Address and document any patient complaints and the resolutions implemented to prevent future incidents.

Patient Monitoring: Conduct regular ward rounds with doctors and medical practitioners to create and evaluate care plans. Ensure proper implementation of doctor’s orders and prescriptions. Monitor nursing activities to conform with hospital protocols, safety standards, and SANC requirements.

Infection Control and Resuscitation: Actively work to reduce healthcare-associated infections. Participate in resuscitation efforts when necessary.

Clinical Guidance: Provide guidance to nursing staff in critical care settings, emphasizing good clinical judgement and the safe use of critical care technologies. Support new critical care technology integration into units.

Laboratory Management: Oversee satellite laboratories and point-of-care testing in blood gases, co-oximetry, electrolytes, etc., ensuring the accurate setup and execution of these services.

Obstetric and Neonatal Care: Lead and enhance essential obstetric and neonatal emergency interventions. Establish positive patient experiences by delivering patient-first, holistic, and customer-focused care.

Team Collaboration: Foster cooperative relationships within healthcare teams. Engage with multidisciplinary teams to effectively manage patient care standards and problem-solving processes.
- Patient Engagement and Satisfaction: Inform patients about the complaints procedure and available feedback platforms. Manage patient relations effectively in the unit by analyzing feedback and improving patient experience standards.
Job Requirements
Candidates must meet the following qualifications and possess relevant experience to be considered for this position:
- A Bachelor of Nursing (B.Cur) or relevant Diploma in General Nursing.
- A valid Midwifery Qualification.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse.
- Proven experience within the maternity ward setting.
- Expertise in maternity nursing practices and standards.
- Knowledge of hospital operations and community health assessment, especially concerning Maternal, Neonatal, Child, and Women’s Health (MNCWH).
- Updated certifications in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support/Advanced Trauma Life Support are advantageous.
