Role Overview:
The QEHS Officer will play a critical role in ensuring that our company adheres to Environmental, Health, and Safety compliance as dictated by applicable legislation, standards, and stakeholder requirements. This role demands a proactive, solution-oriented professional with an assertive demeanor and excellent problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will be stationed in the East Rand, Gauteng, and will be pivotal in maintaining our compliance standards within the mining sector, which constitutes a significant portion of our operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement QEHS policies and procedures in alignment with applicable legislative requirements.
- Provide support to local managers and staff to ensure the facility’s full alignment with QEHS requirements.
- Stay informed about the latest changes in environmental health and safety regulations and best practices to secure ongoing legal compliance.
- Ensure the accuracy and stability of Health and Safety records and document systems.
- Authorize and maintain contractor packs, verifying they meet the minimum client requirements regarding inductions, ID cards, permits, and vehicle inspections.
- Oversee the management and timely availability of cost-effective Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Attend and contribute to safety meetings and toolbox talks, ensuring recommendations are recorded and acted upon.
- Ensure legal appointments are adequately documented and maintained.
- Conduct and update Risk Assessments as needed.
Qualifications and Experience:

Mandatory:
- A minimum of three years of experience as a QEHS Officer in a mining environment, which is non-negotiable.
- SAMTRAC and/or COMSOC 1 and 2 certifications.
- Legal Liability qualification and knowledge of relevant safety regulations per South Africa’s legal and statutory requirements.
- Proven experience in incident investigation, risk assessment, first aid (Level 1), and fire fighting (Level 1).
- Profound understanding of pertinent legislation including OSH Act, MHSA, and NEMA.
- Familiarity with Passport 360 and HSEC Online platforms.
- Competence in crafting comprehensive safety files for mines.
- Demonstrated expertise as an HSE Safety Officer within a mining context.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Advantageous:
- Tertiary qualification in Quality/EHS.
- ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 Internal auditing qualification.
- Proficiency in planning/scheduling and time-management.
- Unendorsed driver’s license for local travel.
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
Work Environment:
This role involves a balanced mix of desk work, which includes computer work and attending meetings, as well as site visits. The QEHS Officer should be prepared to attend medical fitness assessments and demonstrate a willingness to travel to customer and supplier sites as required.
