Position Overview
The Head of Academics is the academic and administrative leader responsible for the day-to-day operations of the English Stream High School. This role entails overseeing school programs, including academics, co-curricular, and community service initiatives. The Head of Academics fosters a challenging educational environment designed to support and nurture each student, promoting their academic, physical, and emotional growth.
This position demands aligning the operation of the IEB stream with the school’s mission and strategic goals as determined by the Board. The Head of Academics collaborates closely with several key figures, including the Heads of NSek / English Middle School, the Head of Abitur German High School, the Pedagogical Head, the Deputy Headmaster, and the Headmaster.
The Head of Academics is expected to set a high standard of excellence across all aspects of the school’s programs, including faculty recruitment, motivation, and support. Moreover, the role entails participating in the accreditation process to ensure the school’s professional standing.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Duties
- Acts as the learning leader for the NSC (IEB) stream.
- Champions the implementation of the strategic plan and school initiatives.
- Builds a collaborative learning culture within the school.
- Directs the NSC (IEB) curricular objectives and professional learning goals.
- Plans and executes a schedule that optimally benefits students across curricular and co-curricular programs while being financially responsible.
- Collaborates with the Pedagogical Head to maintain a consistent and continuous focus on student achievement and assessment, leveraging appropriate data and benchmarks.
- Works with the Heads of NSek / English Middle School to ensure a seamless transition for learners from Middle School to High School.
- Understands the admissions process at highly selective universities.
- Oversees assessment coordination and ensures timely reporting to parents.
- Manages change, fosters innovation, and encourages communication and healthy risk-taking.
- Promotes an environment steeped in the school’s values: Diversity, Inclusion, Responsibility.
- Drives innovation and adaptability within the school.
- Demonstrates leadership in inclusive and diverse learning programs.
- Keeps all stakeholders fully informed on IEB matters.
- Assists in organizing prize-giving events and makes sure certificates and awards are prepared for learners.
Staff Development
- Collaborates with faculty on individual goals and conducts thorough analyses of faculty performance.
- Aids in the recruitment, evaluation, and development of high-quality, committed faculty and staff.
- Identifies professional development needs within the strategic plan and school goals.
- Promotes staff growth through data usage, developing positive relationships, and maintaining a safe environment for professional dialogue.
Communication
- Communicates effectively with faculty and staff to ensure alignment and collaborative decision-making.
- Keeps open lines of communication with faculty, parents, and students through regular written updates.
- Articulates the school programs and initiatives in parent conferences and other necessary venues.
- Effectively articulates the school’s values, strategic plan, policies, and established procedures.
- Oversees procedures for reporting student progress to students and parents.
- Collaborates with Admissions and Communications team on local and global marketing needs.
- Is accessible to students and promotes student leadership and school spirit.
Management
- Understands IEB assessments and transcript documentation to aid global university access.
- Works with the counseling team to provide proper academic and career counseling.
- Develops an annual budget for the English High School’s academic program.
- Manages and accounts for the English Stream’s annual budget, ensuring sufficient resources support learning.
- Empowers stakeholders to contribute to the budgeting process and identifies curriculum needs.
- Demonstrates strength in documentation with a focus on clarity, consistency, and coherence.
Innovation
- Welcomes risk-taking in re-imagining educational courses, spaces, and structures.
- Develops learning opportunities in areas such as STEM, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability, aligned with future workforce needs.
- Acts as a positive force for innovative change.
School Community
- Supports parent engagement and volunteerism within the school.
- Promotes a sense of belonging among parents, students, and teachers.
- Maintains a visible presence at school and community events.
- Contributes to creating an annual calendar filled with engagement opportunities for parents, students, and teachers.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- SACE registered with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
- At least 7 years of teaching experience.
- Relevant teaching qualification in one subject offered at the school is required.
- Proven experience as Head of Academics, Head of Department, or a similar relevant management position in an independent IEB school setting.
- Demonstrated excellence in leadership, management, and improving learning outcomes.
- Exceptional knowledge of best practices in curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, and data-driven decision-making.
Commencement Date: January 2023 or sooner (Negotiable)
Salary
Expected salary range for this position is R416,420 – R695,888 per year.
