Job Summary
Main Purpose of the Job:
AJ Personnel is seeking a dedicated and skilled Community Health Worker (Driver) to join the Key Populations Programme under Wits RHI. As a vital part of our team, your primary responsibility will be to recruit transgender individuals within communities and re-engage those who have defaulted on their treatment plans, with a strong emphasis on improving access to essential clinical services including the treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT), family planning, and more.
Key Performance Areas:
- Conducting both pre and post-HIV test counselling to provide the necessary support and information to those affected.
- Offering adherence counselling and support to clients who are eligible for, or already enrolled in, the Antiretroviral (ARV) programme.
- Following up with clients who have defaulted on their treatment by failing to attend clinic sessions for follow-up treatments, CD4 count results, or six-month monitoring.
- Coordinating outreach clinic visits, ensuring that stakeholders such as hotels are informed of mobile clinic day schedules timely.
- Promoting ongoing studies and recruiting participants through health talks and the distribution of informative brochures at clinics.
- Obtaining verbal consent from potential participants for screening, adhering strictly to ethical guidelines.
- Informing participants about the voluntary nature of their involvement in studies and the associated processes.
- Conducting comprehensive screening interviews to assess the eligibility of participants for studies.
- Scheduling appointments for participants eligible for further screening with WRHI clinics.
- Accurately recording and maintaining screening registers for reference and reporting purposes.
- Obtaining informed consent for both screening and enrolment processes, ensuring participants are fully informed.
- Administering study questionnaires to gather vital information for ongoing research initiatives.
- Addressing patient queries efficiently, offering solutions or referring to applicable departments where necessary.
- Providing adherence counselling and support for clients on Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) programmes.
- Conducting health talks at clinics and other locations to promote preventative strategies, Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT), and adherence counselling.
- Communicating positive health messages focused on STIs, Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), TB, and HIV integration.
- Demonstrating and distributing condoms at various outreach sites and engaging with clients about their correct usage.
- Maintaining proper documentation procedures, capturing results accurately in patient files and related logs.
- Preparing outreach files to ensure all necessary patient information is readily available for each visit.
- Accurately labeling specimen samples per protocol, ensuring seamless tracking and processing.
- Administering timesheets and leave forms for Peer Educators efficiently.
- Driving the outreach team to identified transgender hotspots for community engagement.
- Coordinating with brothel managers and transgender individuals to communicate outreach plans.
- Conducting thorough vehicle safety and condition checks before undertaking transportation duties.
- Operating the vehicle responsibly and respectfully, considering other road users at all times.
- Reporting any vehicle faults, necessary repairs, or accidents promptly, adhering to organizational protocols.
- Completing vehicle usage forms diligently according to established policies.
- Taking personal responsibility and accountability for tasks, ensuring consistent quality and productivity standards.
- Maintaining a positive demeanor and openly accepting feedback to drive personal and professional growth.

Required Minimum Education and Training:
- Successful completion of Grade 12.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency in English and additional African languages, with Xhosa and Zulu preferred.
Required Minimum Work Experience:
- A minimum of 6 months experience working as a Peer Educator within community settings.
Desirable Additional Education, Work Experience and Personal Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of HIV education and counseling methodologies.
- Naturally empathetic with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to handle situations tactfully and respectfully while ensuring confidentiality.
- Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
